Morocco is responsible for blocking appointment of new UN envoy to Western Sahara

Submitted on

Algiers, July 01, 2021 (SPS) - - Ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in Algeria, Abdelkader Taleb Omar, said that the Moroccan system was responsible for blocking the appointment of the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General to Western Sahara with the intention of maintaining the political status quo, calling on the United Nations to denounce this pernicious step before the international public opinion.
In a statement to the website "Sahel Afrique", Taleb Omar said that the SADR has given, in late April, its endorsement of the appointment of the Swedish Staffan de Mistura as the new UN envoy, but Morocco opposes each time, as evidenced by the fact that it has so far rejected 10 proposals out of a total of 12, while the Polisario Front has expressed reservations about only two names.
The Sahrawi ambassador "further denounced the practices and incessant Moroccan sabotage to appoint a UN envoy, so that the whole world knows the truth about who is trampling on the settlement of the conflict and so that the executioner and the victim are never treated on the same footing," especially since this conflict, after the resumption of the armed struggle, threatens international security and peace.
The Sahrawi diplomat welcomed "the strong statements" of Lieutenant General, Chief of Staff of the People's National Army (ANP), Said Chanegriha, on the Sahrawi cause during the Conference on International Security held in the Russian Federation.
Speaking on the issue of Western Sahara, "the last colony in Africa and whose people aspire to freely exercise their right to self-determination," Lieutenant General Said Chanegriha stressed the need for the UN to assume its responsibilities to resolve this conflict.
For the Sahrawi ambassador, the importance of the statements of Lieutenant General Said Chanegriha lies in the fact that they come in the middle of a meeting on international security "to unmask the irresponsibility of the Moroccan system after violating the ceasefire agreement last November 13 and all the threats that weigh on the entire region," especially since the SADR is a factor of balance in the region SPS
