Addis Abeba, 19 December 2020 (SPS) - The African Union (AU) Commissioner for Peace and Security Smail Chergui underlined that the Peace and Security Council (PSC) will hold a special meeting on Western Sahara in order to make proposals likely to reach a new peace and ceasefire agreement between the two sides to the conflict.
In an interview with the channel “France 24,” broadcast on Tuesday, Chergui said that the special Summit held on 6 December had soberly expressed AU’s concern vis-à-vis the latest developments between the two member countries of the Organization, namely Morocco and Western Sahara.
Before holding an in camera session to take the necessary measures, PSC will audition the belligerents that will explain their positions about the latest developments in Western Sahara, he added.
PSC assumes the full responsibility of the diplomatic standstill which led to the dangerous situation in Western Sahara which hasn’t seen a new envoy for more than two years and the refusal to open an office of AU in occupied al-Ayun, said Chergui.
The return of the issue of Western Sahara on the agenda of AU Peace and Security Council is a victory for the continental organization, which has always tried hard to resolve, at its level, the African crises.
He underlined that the African leaders’ decision to list back the Sahrawi issue on PSC’s agenda aims at “giving a new impetus to the issue”. (SPS)
