Petoria, 7 December 2020 (SPS) - South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, expressed on Sunday his deep concern regarding the situation in Western Sahara, calling for "every effort to be made to facilitate the holding of a referendum on self-determination" of the Sahrawi people.
"The current situation in Western Sahara requires us to make every effort in order to ease the holding of the referendum on self-determination in Western Sahara," said African Union President, Ramaphosa, in a speech given at the 14 extraordinary session of the African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government on silencing the guns in Africa.
"We also express our deep concern over the current situation in Western Sahara, which requires to make every effort in order to ease the self-determination of Western Sahara people," Ramaphosa stressed in his statement to the 55 AU member states.
The President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), Brahim Ghali, called on the AU to put pressure on Morocco to end the "illegal military occupation of certain parts of the national territory" Sahrawi. (SPS)
