Western Sahara issue back on AU PSC agenda

Submitted on

Algiers, 7 December 2020 (SPS) -The Western Sahara issue is back on the agenda of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) in accordance with the decision taken on Sunday by the continental organization ahead of the summit themed “Silencing the guns in Africa,” reported Algerian News Agency (APS).
Presented by Lesotho’s PM, the draft decision puts spotlight on the Sahrawi issue by including it in the new agenda of the AU PSC after several attempts from Morocco to drive this AU decision-making mechanism away from the settlement process of the conflict in Western Sahara.
The decision, of which APS received a copy, requests “the Peace and Security Council (PSC), in line with the relevant provisions of its Protocol, to engage the two parties, both of whom are Member States of the AU, to address the unfolding situation in order to prepare conditions for a new cease-fire and to reach a just and durable solution to the conflict, which will provide for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.”
Moreover, the solution “must be in line with the relevant AU-UN decisions and resolutions and the objectives and principles of the Constitutive Act of the African Union,” which focuses on strict respect for the inviolability of the borders inherited from colonization. (SPS)
