New York (USA) Dec 02, 2020 (SPS) - The President of the United Nations Security Council, Ambassador Jerry Matjila, has called on the international community to recognize its failure in Western Sahara and the failure to fulfill its promises with the Saharawi people to reach a definitive solution through the celebration of the self-determination referendum.
The permanent representative of South Africa to the highest international body has expressed his hope that "UN will fulfill its forgotten promise to the Sahrawis, the referendum." "We must all admit that we have disappointed the Saharawi people and we have postponed their self-determination," lamented Jerry Matjila, making clear reference to the inaction of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) and the role of some powers in it support for the intransigence of the Moroccan occupation regime.
The statement by the South African diplomat comes after the invalidation of the Ceasefire Agreement following the incursion of the Moroccan occupation army against Sahrawi civilians in the demilitarized zones south of Western Sahara. The Moroccan violation forced the Saharawi army to react forcefully to evacuate the civilians. One day later, on November 14, the Saharawi president, Brahim Gali, announced through a Presidential Decree the State of War in Western Sahara. SPS
