New York (United Nations) 23 October 2020 (SPS)- Representative of the Republic of Cuba to the UN confirmed in his country’s statement before the 75th Ordinary Session of the UN General Assembly Fourth Committee Thursday that “Cubadefends the right of Western Sahara to self-determination” within the context of the UN doctrine of decolonization.
“Cuba defends the right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination on the basis of the respect for the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations, International Law and relevant UN resolutions,” Cuban representative stressed.
He further indicated that his country “advocates for a mutually acceptable political solution between the parties, which provides for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara in the context of General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV).”
He further indicated that the commitment and solidarity of Cuba with the peoples of the Non-Self-Governing Territory has also manifested itself over the years through collaborative actions.
In this regards, he explained, “a total of 2,098 students from the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic have graduated from Cuban institutions of the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Higher Education, another 78 are studying and 23 new scholarships were offered for courses in the new academic year.” (SPS)
