Madrid (Spain) 04 August 2019 (SPS)- Several international trade unions denounced in a joint communique, Moroccan repression against Sahrawi civilians who were peacefully celebrating the victory of Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations on 19 July, causing the death of a Sahrawi young woman.
Signed by various trade unions from Spain, Italy and France, the communique signed last July 31st called on the European Union and the international community to take efficient pressure measures against Morocco to stop its violence against Saharawi civilians.
The communique described the repression against Saharawi demonstrators in the occupied territories as violent and unacceptable.
This latest episode of violence and repression, the communique stressed, confirms what was described in the recent report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights expressing concerns about the persistence of “torture and violence, arbitrary detention and deprivation of the most basic civil and humanitarian rights of political prisoners.”
The Trade Unions called on the Moroccan authorities to respect human rights, law and international resolutions of the United Nations, while seriously pursuing efforts to implement a referendum to achieve self-determination for the Sahrawi people and through dialogue and negotiation between the two sides to ensure the stability of the Maghreb region.
These unions affirmed their firm commitment to peace and respect for human rights and called upon the Kingdom of Morocco to assume its responsibility for the violent acts that led to the injury and death of Sabah Osman Ahmida.
the trade Unions further considered that what happened lately confirms the need for the UN to mandate its Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) with the mandate to monitor and defend human rights.
The Moroccan forces of occupation, killed young Sahrawi woman, Sabah Othman Ahmeida (Injourni), last Friday 19th July in the occupied city of El Aaiun, after she was hit by two police car during her participation in peaceful demonstrations celebrating the victory of the Algerian soccer team in the African Games.
According to eyewitnesses, the martyr was seriously injured after the car hit her. The policemen didn’t bother to give her the necessary help, and she was left without medical intervention for at least 15 minutes before an Ambulance came to take her to the hospital where she passed away.
Many other injured victims were also registered though the majority avoid identifying themselves out of fear of retaliation.
