Frente POLISARIO urges rapid progress towards a solution providing for the Self-determination of the People of Western Sahara

Submitted on

Geneva, Dec 6 2018 (SPS) - Today the Frente POLISARIO concluded the first UN-led round table on Western Sahara, on behalf of the Sahrawi people. we reaffirmed our commitment to pursuing a just, lasting and mutually-agreed political solution leading to a process of self-determination in Western Sahara.
Our priority remains to deliver the self-determination of the Sahrawi people in accordance with relevant UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions. To this end, we engaged constructively with the UN-led talks in Geneva, without preconditions and in good faith. We are doing our part, and we are hopeful that Morocco will do its part too. The status quo is not an option. So it is crucial that the international community makes a positive contribution to maximise the chances of a negotiated solution between the Frente POLISARIO and Morocco.
We are therefore deeply concerned by the EU Commission's sustained, illegal and uncompromising efforts to secure trade deals with Morocco which include the territory of Western Sahara in violation of the rulings of the European Court of Justice. Such an approach, which clearly preempts and undermines the outcome of negotiations, defies logic. We urge European leaders to use this window of opportunity to invest their efforts into the UN Peace Process, and use trade constructively as a positive incentive for peace.
n parallel, we are encouraged by the US administration's ongoing and strong support for the UN process. And we welcome the input, support, and determination of our partners in the African Union. A negotiated solution is vital for the future of Western Sahara and the Maghreb region as a whole. We remain committed to the UN-led process as a vehicle for a positive future in the region.
We applaud the efforts of the PESG, His Excellency Mr Horst Kohler, and we support his efforts to resume the political process on Western Sahara to achieve a peaceful, just, lasting and mutually-agreed solution that provides for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.SPS
