New York, March 18, 2018 (SPS) - The United National Envoy for Western Sahara Horst Kohler on Wednesday will present to the Security Council the first conclusions of his mediation which started in last October, a first briefing closely scrutinized in New York shortly before the next report on the Western Sahara conflict.
During the meeting to take place in camera, Kohler will be accompanied by the new Head of the MINURSO (United Nations Mission for Referendum in Western Sahara) Colin Stewart, appointed in December.
Previously scheduled for February, the briefing will take place in accordance with resolution 2351 in 2017, which asked the UN SG to present a report on the situation in Western Sahara after six months of the appointment of the new UN Personal Envoy.
The resolution also invites the SG to inform the Security Council about the progress made by Kohler to find a mutually acceptable political solution allowing the Sahrawi people to exercise the right to self-determination.
Guterres held a series of consultations with the two parties to conflict, namely the Polisario Front and Morocco, and the two observer countries Algeria and Mauritania. (SPS)
