Algiers, Jan 11, 2018 (SPS) - The National Algerian Committee of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (CNASPS) hailed Wednesday, with great satisfaction, the conclusions of the Advocate general of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) Wathelet, who said that the fisheries agreement concluded between the European Union and Morocco is “invalid,” said the Committee in a communiqué.
The CNASPS hailed this new and resounding victory of the Sahrawi people “whose legitimate demands are recognized and reaffirmed, for the second time in a year, by the highest legal authority of the European Union which, without appeal, declares the illegitimacy of this situation, restores Sahrawis in their sovereignty on their wealth, in their inalienable right to dignity, freedom and independence, and which recognizes Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, stating the Moroccan occupation and the confirmed violation of international law.”
“The CNASPS and all the support committees of the International Movement of Solidarity with the Sahrawi people remain vigilant with the effective, concrete and fast implementation of the CJEU’s decision, by delaying the stalling tactics and the shaky compromises that aim for the non-implementation of these decisions, and which do not honour their authors of accomplice countries, unworthy of the European space, matrix of the respect for the law, the practice of democracy and the constant promotion of human rights,” added the statement.
For Advocate General Wathelet, the EU-Morocco a fisheries agreement is “invalid” because it applies to Western Sahara and its adjacent waters:” by concluding this agreement, the European Union violated its obligation to respect the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and not to recognize an illegal situation resulting from breach of that right and has not put in place the safeguard necessary to ensure that the exploitation of the natural resources of Western Sahara is for the benefit of the people of that territory.”SPS
