Brussels Jan 09, 2018 (SPS)- The fisheries agreement concluded between the European Union (EU) and Morocco is invalid because of its implementation on Western Sahara and its territorial waters, according to the findings of the advocate general of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), published on Wednesday.
“According to the Advocate General Wathelet, the agreement on fisheries concluded between EU and Morocco is invalid as it is implemented in Western Sahara and adjacent waters, announced CJEU in a communiqué.
In his findings presented to CJUE, Advocate General Melchior Wathelet said that “by concluding this agreement, the Union has violated its obligation to respect the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.”
He underlined that EU has also violated its obligation to “not recognize an illegal situation resulting from its violation and didn’t ensure the necessary guarantees to make sure that the exploitation of Western Sahara’s natural resources is done for the benefit of the people of this territory.”SPS
