Chahid El Hafed (Saharawi Refugee Camp), Nov 28, 2017 (SPS) - President of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) Brahim Ghali on Monday expressed satisfaction with the position of SADR within the African Union (AU), greeting the Union's "firm" position in favour of the strict respect of its constitution and founding principles.
In an address he made Monday at the Saharawi refugee camp of Chahid El Hafed, marking the 42nd anniversary of the creation of the Saharawi National Council, SADR's president and secretary general of the Frente POLISARIO expressed his satisfaction with the "position occupied now by the Saharawi State within the African Union."
The Saharawi leader cited his country's "cooperation and partnership with other countries and international organizations."
Gali also hailed African Union's firm position regarding the necessity for all members to abide by its constitution and founding principles, especially in relation to the post-independence borders and member country's sovereignty."
In this respect, he called on the United Nations "to assume its responsibility in the decolonization process of the last colony in Africa (Western Sahara) and to speed up the implementation of the mandate of MINURSO (UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara).
The president of SADR advocated Western Sahara people's right to decide on their own fate through a referendum on self-determination, in line with the United Nations Charter and the various UN resolutions in favour of independence of colonized peoples and countries."
The Saharawi president stressed the need for the "UN Security Council to fully assume its responsibility in the face of Moroccan occupation authorities' attempts to undermine the efforts made to settle the conflict."
The Saharawi president recalled the latest Security Council's decision concerning the violation of the ceasefire agreement and the first military covenant in the region of Guerguerat.
The Saharawi leader warned against Security Council's failure to provide an "effective support to the UN chief's personal envoy for Western Sahara, Horst Kohler, as it was done with his predecessor, Christopher Ross."SPS
