New York, Oct 11, 2017 (SPS) - The Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee) adopted on Tuesday a draft resolution reiterating the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.
The Fourth Committee welcomed "the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy (to reach) a mutually acceptable solution that guarantees self-determination of Western Sahara people," said the draft resolution, which recalled the responsibility of the United Nations towards the Sahrawi people.
The Committee on Decolonization reiterated "the inalienable right of all peoples to self-determination and independence, in compliance with the principles of the UN Charter and its Resolution 1514 of 14 December 1960, which contains the Declaration on the Granting of independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples."
The draft resolution, adopted without a vote, also reaffirmed the mandate of the Committee of 24 concerning the decolonization of Western Sahara territory, rejecting the claims of Morocco's ambassador to UN, Omar Hillal, that the settlement of the Western Sahara conflict was the prerogative of the Security Council.
The Fourth Committee requested the Special Committee on Decolonization, known as the Committee of 24, to continue monitoring the situation in Western Sahara and to submit a report thereon to the General Assembly in its seventy-third session.
The Commission invited the Secretary-General to submit a report on the implementation of this resolution.SPS
