UN General Assembly: Nicaragua voices its regret that the colonial situation of Western Sahara remains unresolved

New York, October 03, 2017 (SPS) - The Ambassador, Alternate Permanent Representative of Nicaragua to the United Nations, Jaime Hermida Castillo said that his country regrets that in four decades the process of decolonization in Western Sahara has not yet been completed and its people still have no access to their right to self-determination .
In the Debate on Decolonization of the seventy-second session of the General Assembly held on Monday in New York, the Representative of Nicaragua reiterated his country's commitment and solidarity with the national liberation struggle of the Saharawi people for their self-determination and independence.
He expressed his hope that the process of negotiation between the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic and the Kingdom of Morocco would be resumed. He emphasized the need to "identify all efforts to ensure a peaceful solution in Western Sahara, a resumption of hostilities would be a catastrophe. It is imperative that the Saharawi people have the opportunity to freely choose their destiny through the desired referendum.  SPS
