President of Republic calls on UN to protect Sahrawis in occupied zones of Western Sahara

Submitted on

Bir-Lehlou, Sep 25, 2017 (SPS) - President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, has called on the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, to protect the Saharawi citizens in the occupied zones of Western Sahara from the daily violence of the Moroccan repression apparatus.
In a letter on Sunday to Mr. Guterres, The President of the Republic indicated that Sahrawi citizens had been preparing for a peaceful protest in El-Aaiun, the capital of occupied Western Sahara, when Moroccan forces surrounded houses of the families of Gdeim Izik group prisoners and besieged the squares and entrances to Samara Street and Matalah neighbourhood, using dozens of vehicles and trucks loaded with various tools of repression and persecution.
He highlighted that the Moroccan forces had also intervened brutally against a similar peaceful demonstration organised on the same day in the occupied city of Boujdour, to demand the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence, and release of Gdeim Izik group prisoners and all Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons.
He added that the Moroccan brutal intervention had left many Sahrawi civilian casualties, including members of families of political prisoners, former abductees and political prisoners, human rights activists, bloggers, journalists and others.
He stressed that this new Moroccan intervention had confirmed the urgent need for the intervention of the international community, represented by its highest body, the United Nations, to implement the requirements of international law and international humanitarian law through the immediate release of Gdeim Izik prisoners and all Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons, and drop the unfair judgments and conduct independent international medical expertise on Gdeim Izik prisoners and their transfer to Western Sahara, in accordance with the requirements of the Fourth Geneva Convention.
