Shaheed El Hafed, October 9, 2016 (SPS) The National Secretariat of the Polisario Front has demanded the United Nations Security Council to take “urgent and critical” concrete measures to put an end to the intransigence of the Moroccan party and the urgent resumption of the UN/AU settlement process to organize a self-determination referendum for the Saharawi people.
In a statement sanctioning its third ordinary session on October 8-9, chaired by the President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Front Polisario, Brahim Ghali, the National Secretariat strongly condemned "repeated and intentional" Moroccan violations of the agreement of ceasefire in the area of El Guegrate (South of Western Sahara), demanding the UN Security Council to take "urgent and critical" concrete measures to put an end to the arrogance and intransigence of the Moroccan party.
The National Secretariat held the Moroccan state responsible for the dangerous consequences of this escalation on peace, security and stability in the region.
The National Secretariat reaffirmed the need to expand the powers of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) for the protection and monitoring of human rights so that it can fulfill its main mission, namely the holding of a self-determination referendum for the Saharawi people.
The National Secretariat also called for the immediate return of political and civil component of MINURSO expelled last March by Morocco and supporting its operational capabilities to effectively and strictly monitor the cease fire signed between the Polisario Front and the Kingdom of Morocco in 1991 under the UN auspices.
The Polisario Front reiterated its constructive will to cooperate fully with the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy, Mr. Christopher Ross, for the decolonization of the Western Sahara and allow the Sahrawi people to enjoy their legitimate rights to self-determination and independence.
The National Secretariat urged the international community to exert the necessary pressure for the release of all Saharawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons, the dismantling of the Moroccan military wall of shame and the opening of the occupied territories of Western Sahara before the observers and the international media.
The National Secretariat denounced the shameful support of France to the Moroccan occupier, including within the Security Council in contradict with international legitimacy, holding it responsible for tension and threat to security and stability in the region.
The National Secretariat noted the opinion of the General Attorney of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) Melchior Wathelet in the case between the Polisario Front and the EU Council on the trade agreement in agricultural products and fisheries with Morocco including the occupied Western Sahara.
The National Secretariat expressed its satisfaction about the confirmation of the European Court that Western Sahara is not part of the Moroccan territory, and consequently, any Euro-Moroccan bilateral agreement cannot be applicable to this non-autonomous territory, and the Polisario Front, the only legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people, can sue at international courts.
