Shahid El Hafed, 15 Feb 2016 (SPS) - Sahrawi Prime Minister Abdelkader Taleb Omar urged the European Union to step up efforts to help the people of Western Sahara exercise their right to self-determination and independence.

"The EU should exercise more pressure on Morocco to support the United Nations efforts aiming at finding a solution to the Western Sahara conflict," Taleb Omar said on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).

He also welcomed African Union's position in favour of the decolonization of Western Sahara and its role on the international scene, particularly the consensus expressed at the UN Security Council on the expected visit of the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to the region.

The Sahrawi Prime minister, hailed the position of Sweden and its solidarity with the people of Western Sahara in their legitimate struggle for self-determination.

He, however, deplored France's position, which "constitutes an obstacle to the recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in Europe." (SPS)
