AU reiterates need to determine a date for the referendum in Western Sahara

Submitted on

Addis Ababa, January 28, 2016 (SPS) - The African Union (AU) on Wednesday reiterated the need to determine a date for the holding of referendum on self-determination of the Saharawi people and insisted on renewing efforts to find a solution to a conflict that has lasted four decades.

At its ordinary meeting of the Permanent Representatives, the AU called on the UN to set a date for the referendum on self-determination for Saharawi people.

The AU Commissioner, Ms. Dlamini Zuma, in its annual report on the situation in Western Sahara, said that has not made any progress in finding a solution to this conflict that has lasted four decades, pointing out that the AU, in its ordinary session in July 2015, called on the UN General Assembly to determine a date for the referendum on self-determination of the people of Western Sahara to advance the peace process.

The same petition was endorsed by the Peace and Security Council of the AU at its meeting on 26 September 2015. (SPS)
