Moroccan repressive forces intervene brutally against peaceful demonstration

Submitted on

El Aaiun (occupied territories), January 25, 2016 (SPS) Moroccan repressive forces intervened brutally on Saturday to disperse a peaceful demonstration, organized in the occupied city of El Aaiun by Sahrawi human rights activists to demand the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence, indicated Sahrawi human rights source.

Elements of the police and auxiliary forces in uniform and plainclothes besieged the venue where the event took place, before intervening forcefully to disperse peaceful protesters, added the same source.

The Moroccan occupation authorities also prevented Saharawi citizens from joining this event, as well as Sahrawi bloggers and journalists from filming the brutal dispersal of the peaceful demonstration.

The intervention left several injuries "with different degrees of severity" among peaceful demonstrators, whose 4 of them were transferred to hospital.

The event coincides with the campaign launched recently across European and the world, asking the UN Security Council to organize, "before the end of 2017", the referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people. (SPS)
