Council of Ministers welcomes new international petition calling for organization of self-determination referendum for Saharawi people

Shaheed El Hafed, Jan 24, 2016 (SPS) - The Council of Ministers expressed Saturday its satisfaction to the launch of an international petition asking the UN Security Council to organize, "before the end of 2017", the referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people, denouncing the practices of obstruction and provocation of Morocco.

 

In a statement following its meeting chaired by President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Frente Polisario, Mohamed Abdelaziz, the Council of Ministers stressed that the United Nations must assume its responsibility through exercising pressure and sanctions needed on the Moroccan state to accelerate the decolonization of the last colony in Africa.

 

The Council, in this regard, called for the release of all Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons and stop the practices of harassment and deportation perpetrated against them by the Moroccan occupying authorities and shed light on the fate of over of 651 disappeared Sahrawis at the hands of Morocco.

 

It also called for providing MINURSO with a mechanism to protect and monitor the human rights in Western Sahara, stop the plundering of natural resources and the dismantle the Moroccan wall of shame that represents a crime against humanity. (SPS)
