Tindouf, December 6, 2015 (SPS) – The partners working in mines field in Western Sahara held Tuesday and Wednesday their annual meeting at the UN mission's headquarters in Tindouf, under the joint supervision of the Sahrawi Office for the Coordination of Mine Action and MINURSO Mine Action Cell.

The meeting was attended by representatives of international organizations and bodies working in the field of mine action in Western Sahara, such as British company DML and Norwegian organization NPA, which operate in the field of demining in the liberated zones, in addition to the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations Agency for Refugees.

The participants noted the scale of threat posed by the buffer zone, east of the Moroccan wall of shame as the largest minefield in the world that runs along 2700 km, the region with the largest number of accidents and civilian casualties.

The meeting was an opportunity for the exchange of views between the partners on the most effective ways to combat the threat of mines in light of the scarcity of sources of funding. (SPS)
