Brussels, 23 Nov 2015 (SPS) - European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini reiterated EU's support for a "just, lasting and mutually political solution, which will allow the people of Western Sahara to exercise their right to self-determination."

To a question of the Euro-deputy Paloma Lopez Bermejo about EU's role in the implementation of the resolution 1514 (XV) of the United Nations General Assembly on the decolonization of Western Sahara and particularly the implementation of the principle of self-determination, through the free expression of the will of the people of the Sahrawi territory occupied by Morocco, Moghereni said the EU supports the efforts of the UN Chief for the resolution of the conflict.

In this regard, she underlined that "the EU will take no action that may undermine the UN chief's efforts."

The Euro-deputy also expressed, in his question, concerns over the slowness in the implementation of the agreements adopted by the parties and "flagrant violation" of international law as well as persistent human rights abuses by Morocco.

Moghereni said that the EU "follows closely the human rights situation in Morocco," through its representation in Rabat. (SPS)
