Brussels, 8 Nov 2015 (SPS) - European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini voiced "preoccupation" about the human rights situation in Western Sahara, reiterating EU support to a "just" solution ensuring Sahrawi people's right to self-determination, reported Saturday Europa Press agency.

"The EU supports the efforts of the UN Secretary General to reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution for the two conflicting parties, providing for Western Sahara people self-determination as part of the agreements complying with the UN charter principles," Mogherini said in an answer to MEP Paloma Lopez, added the agency.

The representative of Spanish party Podemos at the European Parliament have urged Mogherini for EU "concrete actions as soon as possible to revive the negotiations" between the Polisario Front and Morocco,  to settle "the final status of Western Sahara territory" and end the Moroccan occupation.

They also called for the appointment of EU Special Envoy for Western Sahara, the same source added.

Concerning the Human Rights abuse and the ban of access to Sahrawi occupied territories, EU Foreign Policy chief said that the EU maintains "contacts" with the human rights defence organizations.

Western Sahara is Africa's last colony. It has been occupied by Morocco for 40 years. (SPS)
