WFP announces Saudi donation of dates for Saharawi refugees

Algiers, May 27, 2015 (SPS) - World Food Programme (WFP) said Tuesday it has delivered a food aid shipment containing 252 tons of dates as part of an annual donation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the benefit of Saharawi refugees currently living in the Algerian province of Tindouf.

“A shipment of 252 tons of dates has been cleared at the port of Oran as part of the annual donation by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the World Food Programme (WFP) in Algeria,” stated WFP said in a statement.

This is the fifth time that such a donation is allocated to the Saharawi refugees in Algeria, adding that this shipment has left on April 23-24, 2015 the port of Oran in containers aboard special trucks, to reach the refugee camps three days later.

In a ceremony organized at the Saudi Embassy in Algiers in the presence of Saudi ambassador Mahmoud bin Hussain Qattan, WFP Country Director Romain Sirois said such donations of dates provided by Saudi Arabia represent “a remarkable assistance” to Saharawi refugees during the period of Ramadan.

He also underlined that the contribution will help diversify food provided for Saharawi refugees amid the lack of funding, adding that all assistances as part of World Food Programme in Algeria are delivered in coordination with national and international organizations. (SPS)
