Saharawi Republic takes part at 6th ordinary session of Pan-African Parliament

Midrand (South Africa), May 19, 2015 (SPS) - The sixth ordinary session of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) kicked off Monday in the PAP’s official headquarter in Johannesburg, South Africa, in the presence of Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta accompanied by members of the Kenyan government as guest of honor, the diplomatic corps accredited to South Africa, and SADR’s parliamentary group.


In her opening speech on behalf of the South African government, the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ms. Nomaindiya Mfeketo affirmed her country’s solid position on the question of the Saharawi people, calling the African Parliament and the institutions of international community to intensify action so to enable the Saharawi people to exercise their legitimate rights, notably of which the right to self-determination and independence.


The President of the Namibian Parliament Mr. Peter H. Katjavivi, for his part, appealed to the international community, especially the Pan-African Parliament, to assume its responsibilities towards the decolonization of Western Sahara, the last colony in the African continent.


He also reiterated his country’s firm and principled position of support to the just cause of the Saharawi people for freedom and independence.


Lasting until May 19th, the session will elect a new leadership to serve for the next term.(SPS)
