Johannesburg, May 7, 2015 (SPS) - The Saharawi Students Union (UESARIO) on Wednesday briefed the African partners of the Danish non-governmental organization Afrika Kontakt, currently meeting in Johannesburg as part of a partnership seminar, about the question of Western Sahara.

Delivering a detailed presentation, UESARIO International Secretary Jalihenna Mohamed highlighted the historical, legal and political aspects of the question of Western Sahara, the last unfinished decolonization matter in Africa.

Concerning the legal status of Western Sahara, Jalihanna said it is still registered in the United Nations list of the non-self-governing territories since 1965, adding “the Saharawi people are still waiting to enjoy their right to self-determination through a free, democratic and impartial referendum.”

“There is no country in the world that recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara,” stated UESARIO member, underlying that the Saharawi State, a full-pledged member of the African Union, is happily recognized by many countries worldwide.

He, on other hand, spoke about the plunder of Western Sahara natural resources by Morocco and some foreign companies, including of which Kosmos Energy, Total and Agrium, among others.

Reacting to the presentation, the participants expressed their anger for the continued occupation of Western Sahara by Morocco, showing solidarity with the Saharawi people.

Some activists from Afrika Kontakt, who intervened in the workshop, expressed “full readiness” to continue working until the right of the Saharawi people to freedom and independence is met. (SPS)
