Western Sahara: Christopher Ross holds working session with Polisario Front negotiators

Submitted on

Shaheed Elhafed (Refugee Camps) - Personal Envoy of UN Secretary General for Western Sahara Christopher Ross Tuesday held a working meeting with the Polisario Front negotiators.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the negotiator Ahmed Bukhari said that the visit came in advance of the presentation of the report on Western Sahara to the Security Council, stating that "Ross’s presence in the refugee camps reflects UN seriousness in its quest for a settlement of the Saharawi case."

"It is time to put pressure on Morocco to compel it to comply with international legality," he said, adding that "the Saharawi party has raised a number of issues including decolonization, the obligation to implement the relevant resolutions for the organization of free and transparent referendum and the situation in the occupied territories."

Ross arrived Monday in the Saharawi refugee camps in Tindouf for a three-day working visit "to prepare a new round of negotiations between the Polisario Front and Morocco."

During his stay in the Saharawi refugee camps, he will hold meetings with officials of the Polisario Front and members of the Sahrawi government.

This is the second visit of the UN envoy since early 2015 after the one he paid in February.

The visit comes just weeks before the meeting of the UN Security Council on Western Sahara question scheduled for next April. (SPS)
