Embezzlement of European Union aid to Sahrawi refugees: Unfair accusations, says EU

Brussels, March 26, 2015 (SPS) - European Union (EU) on Wednesday dubbed "unfair" accusations Morocco's allegations about misappropriation of its humanitarian aid to the Saharawi refugee camps in Tindouf.

"The accusations of embezzlement of the EU humanitarian aid to refugee camps in Tindouf are unfair, especially in view of the efforts and measures taken by the European Commission," said Kristalina Georgieva, the deputy chief of the European Commissioner in charge of Budget and Human Resources.

Georgieva was received by the Committee on Budgetary Control (CONT) at the European Parliament, to discuss Parliamentary Commission's draft report on 2013 budgetary discharge of the European Commission and its executive bodies.

In reply to a question about allegations relating to the EU humanitarian aid to the Saharawi refugee camps in Tindouf, Georgieva insisted that "those accusations are unfair," considering the efforts made by the European Commission and other concerned bodies.

She stressed that from the outset of the investigations undertaken by the European Anti-Fraud Office (EAFO) in 2003, the European Commission has taken all relevant preventive and corrective measures.

From 2015, the European Commission has been rigorously following up and controlling the aid, its shipment and all relevant logistic aspects. (SPS)
