Campaign to put pressure on Security Council to hold self-determination referendum in Western Sahara

Submitted on

London, March 17, 2015 (SPS) - The NGO Western Sahara Action Forum (WSAF) has launched a campaign to sign a petition for the release of Saharawi political prisoners and the holding of the referendum on self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.

In this regard, the NGO called for putting pressure on the United Nations Security Council to quickly deal with the situation in Western Sahara, for the release of Saharawi political prisoners, as well as the organization, this year, of the self-determination referendum for the Saharawi people.

In this petition, the non-governmental organization called for immediate action against violations of human rights committed “with impunity” by the Moroccan authorities against the Saharawi population in the occupied territories.

WSAF emphasizes on the need to extend the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to the monitoring of human rights. It also calls for putting an end to the illegal exploitation of Western Sahara’s natural resources. (SPS)
