Submitted on

Brussels, Feb 21, 2015 (SPS) - The European Union (EU) reiterated, through the voice of its High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini, its support to the efforts of the United Nations to achieve a solution allowing the self-determination of the Saharawi people.

EU supports the efforts of the United Nations’ Secretary General to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution which allows the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara within the context of arrangements consistent with the goals and principles of the United Nations’ Charter, said Mogherini in a reply to a European deputy.

EU, she added, encourages the parties in conflict, Morocco and the Polisario Front to find a negotiated solution to the conflict and welcomes the efforts of the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary General Christopher Ross and the MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara).

EU will refrain from any action that can undermine the efforts of the Secretary General of the United Nations and his Special Envoy Christopher Ross, added the European official. (SPS)
