66th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Sahrawi president honored in Algiers

Algiers, December 11, 2014 (SPS) - The Sahrawi President Mohamed Abdelaziz was honored Wednesday in Algiers by the National Consultative Commission for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (Advisory Commission), on the occasion of the 66th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

 

Placed under the theme "Together for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people," the ceremony was attended by members of the government, advisors to the President of the Republic and several associations of civil society, and members of both Houses of Parliament and Sahrawi human rights defenders.

 

Former president of the Algerian National Commission of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People, Mahrez Lamari, has also been honored on that occasion.

 

In his address, the Sahrawi President praised the positions "of principle" adopted by Algeria vis-à-vis the Sahrawi cause, which "are based on the decisions of the UN and the African Union (AU) and the principles of the Revolution of 1st November."

 

He also stressed the humanitarian position of Algeria which "hosts on its soil thousands of children, women and old and needy people who fled the oppression of the Moroccan forces of occupation." (SPS)
