MEPs support human rights organizations boycotting 2nd World Human Rights Forum in Marrakech

Strasbourg, 28 November 2014 (SPS) – Members of the European Parliament has expressed their support to the human rights organizations boycotting the 2nd World Human Rights Forum held in Marrakech, Morocco, in a statement Wednesday.

 

“We, the undersigned, stand by those human rights organisations that are boycotting the event, such as AMDH and the Moroccan League for Human Rights, and Sahrawi NGOs for human rights,” said the statement.

 

“We ask those that do attend to press in the strongest manner upon the human rights abuses committed by the Moroccan state,” it added.

 

On this occasion, the MEPs denounced the human rights situation in Morocco, and in particular in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.

 

“The 2nd World Human Rights Forum must not hide the grave human rights situation in Morocco and the occupied Western Sahara,” the MEPs stressed, adding “it should provide a catalyst for the international community, including the European Union, to finally act in pressing Morocco to end the human rights abuses it imposes.”
