Submitted on

Madrid, November 15, 2014 (SPS) - Sahrawi activist Aminetu Haidar, president of the Collective of Sahrawi Human Rights Defenders denounced Friday the unjust incarceration of Sahrawi activists and life sentences against nine Sahrawi civilians by Moroccan military court.

Aminetu Haidar spoke Friday before the participants in the 39th European Conference of Support and Solidarity with the Saharawi People (EUCOCO) condemning the "excessive use of force practiced by the Moroccan state against the Saharawi peaceful demonstrators demanding their legitimate rights."

The Sahrawi activist said Morocco prohibits all forms of freedom of expression and the right of association.

Given the serious human rights violations, brutal repressive practices and unleashed campaigns by the authorities against the Saharawi civilians and activists, President of CODESA calls repeatedly and urgently for "the establishment of a UN mechanism responsible for monitoring and ensuring the effective protection of human rights in Western Sahara."
