Madrid ,November 14, 2014 (SPS) - This Friday marks 39 years of the signing of the infamous Madrid Accords among Spain, Morocco and Mauritania of Ould Dadah. Under the agreement, the Saharawi people was divided into those who remained under occupation and those who fled under bombardment of the Moroccan aviation to find a safe refuge in the Saharawi refugee camps in Algeria.
On November 14, 1975, the representatives of Spanish, Moroccan and Mauritanian met to sign the disastrous agreement which divided Western Sahara against all international laws, the United Nations and Security Council resolutions and the opinion of International Court of Justice in Hague.
The United Nations has never considered Morocco as the administering power of the territory of Western Sahara, which remains on the UN list as territory awaiting decolonization and, therefore, it has on the ground the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).
After these 39 years, Morocco has no sovereignty over the Western Sahara and it is nothing more than a simple occupying power and, therefore, its presence in Western Sahara is illegal.
The Security Council will have to rule on the dispute next spring, in April 2015, a time in which Spain will be forming part of this body as a nonpermanent member and it is called to assume its responsibilities as administering power of Western Sahara and positively cooperate for the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination.
