UNHCR firmly committed to ensure protection for Saharawi refugees, says Guterres

Geneva, Nov 7, 2014 (SPS) - UN High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres, on Thursday expressed “strong commitment” to ensure protection for Saharawi refugees, in a meeting with a Saharawi delegation.


The UN official said that ensuring protection for Saharawi refugees is “a humanitarian duty and responsibility must be assumed by the UNHCR,” adding that he is keen to make better the situation of these refugees.


Head of the Saharawi delegation Mr. Mhamed Khaddad, for his part, praised, on behalf of the Polisario Front leadership and Saharawi authorities, the continuous efforts being undertaken by UNHCR to improve the situation of Saharawi refugees.


He, in the same regard, handed a letter from President Mohamed Abdelaziz to Guterres expressing POLISARIO’s willingness to continue its constructive cooperation with the UN High Commission for Refugees, voicing satisfaction at the level of relations already exist between the two sides.


The delegation is composed of Mhamed Khadda, Saharawi coordinator with the MINURSO, Bouhabaini Yahya, president of Saharawi Red Crescent, Amaima Abdeslam, Polisario Front’s representative in Switzerland. (SPS)
