British Library launches collection of Sahrawi songs on its website

Submitted on

London, October 25, 2014 (SPS) – The British Librarylaunched recently on its website on the internet a collection of Sahrawi national songs, according to the Polisario Front representation in Britain.

The British Library confirmed that the collection includes diversities of Sahrawi songs, traditional, revolutionary and modern, with the aim of showing the “richness of the cultural heritage of the Saharawi people, who lived in exile since 1975”.

The official website of the British Library provides details and explanations about the collection and Sahrawi music in general, along with photographs and videos taken of Sahrawi musicians during their performance of songs.

The British Library addressed the political situation of Western Sahara, stating on its website that “the Western Sahara is known as the last colony in Africa, and Sahrawi territories still under the Moroccan occupation waiting for a suspended referendum”.

The move comes after the British Library announced in May its preservation of Sahrawi music as an endangered heritage. (SPS)
