Adala UK urges EU to hold Morocco to account for human rights abuses

London, Oct 21, 2014 (SPS) - The UK-based non-governmental organization, Adala, has called upon the European Union (EU) to hold the Kingdom of Morocco to account for its human rights violations against the Saharawi people.

In a letter addressed to the 73 British MEP, Adala UK urged the MEP to use their influence to make known the issue of human rights violations that occur on a daily basis in occupied Western Sahara and to ensure that the EU holds its economic and political partner, the Kingdom of Morocco, to account for these.

The letter asked the EU to respect Article 2 of EU-Morocco Fisheries Pact which call for the respect of the “democratic principles and fundamental human rights” of the Saharawi people.

“Clearly, Morocco disregards the Saharawi population’s most basic human rights on a daily basis and sadly, the tragic death of Hasana El Wali is only one example of this,” stated the NGO.

It also underlined that the death of the aforementioned Saharawi political prisoner, Hasana El Wali, was due to the medical negligence he suffered inside prison, condemning Morocco’s refusal to conduct “an independent autopsy” of his body to determine the cause circumstances behind the death.

Adala UK said they regularly report other incidents of human rights violations, such as the violent repression of peaceful demonstrations, arbitrary detentions, torture and attacks on minors in the occupied territories of Western Sahara. (SPS)
