CODESA calls to save life of Sahrawi political prisoner

Submitted on

El Aaiun (Occupied Territories), August 7, 2014 (SPS) - The Collective of Sahrawi Human Rights Defenders (CODESA) has called for an urgent intervention to save the life of Sahrawi political prisoner Abdelkhalek Merkhy who is on a hunger strike since August 14, as well as fulfilling his demands and ensuring his right to a fair trial.

The Sahrawi political prisoner is on a hunger strike to protest against the appalling conditions he is suffering of inside the prison of Ait Melloul, Morocco, causing him serious health troubles which may affect his physical integrity especially that he continues to suffer from pain all over his body.

CODESA held the Moroccan state fully responsible for the fatal consequences of this open hunger strike, demanding it to drop all the charges fabricated against him by the officers of the judicial police and various intelligence services, on the grounds of his position on the issue of Western Sahara and his human rights activities as a general secretary of the Sahrawi Committee for the Defense of Human Rights in Guelmim, southern Morocco.
