UN will pursue responsibility to enable Saharawi people to right of self-determination (M'hamed Khadad)

Submitted on

Shaheed Hafed, September 7, 2014 (SPS) -  The United Nations will pursue its responsibility to enable the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination through a free, democratic, and fair referendum under international supervision, confirmed the Coordinator with the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), Mr. M'hamed Khadad, in a statement Saturday to SPS.

Mr. M'hamed Khadad underlined, on the eve of the 23th anniversary of the ceasefire which came into force between the Polisario Front and Morocco on September 6, 1991, that the intransigence of the Moroccan regime and its attempt to impose outdated colonial solutions, demonstrate its fear of the referendum and its certainty of the unity of the Saharawi people and its determination for independence.

He recalled what the National Secretariat of the Polisario Front stated at the end of its recent session, highlighting that the Saharawi people is determined and united on their choices in freedom and independence at any cost.

The National Secretariat of the Polisario Front had stated that the UN and AU settlement plan of 1991, which has been signed by both parties, the Polisario Front and Kingdom of Morocco, and approved by the UN Security Council, and provides for the  organization of a referendum on self-determination of the Saharawi people, represent the most suitable democratic solution, stressing that the Polisario front will continue to confront the destructive practices of Morocco, and will not accept compromising the sacred interests of the Saharawi people.
