Algiers, August 12, 2014 (SPS) - More than 95 tons of cannabis resin were seized in the first six months of 2014, an increase of 25 tons of the amount seized during the same period of 2013, the National Office for the Fight Against Drugs and Drug Addiction (ONLDT) told APS.
“In total, 95 592, 973 tons of cannabis resin were seized during the first six months of this year, against 70 202,043 kg during the same period in 2013,” said the Office’s interim CEO Mohamed Benhalla in an interview with APS.
Referring to a global assessment from the fight against drugs services, he said that “all the seized cannabis resin come from Morocco,” underlining that Algeria “has always raised this issue.”
“The amount of seized cannabis resin during the first quarter of 2014, in comparison with the same period in 2013 increased by 36%,” he added.
Benhalla added that the situation “is not surprising, but remains very disturbing notably for the health of the Algerians and crime trends.” (SPS)
