Human Rights in Morocco: Amnesty International calls new king of Spain

Submitted on

Madrid, July 11, 2014 (SPS) - Amnesty International (AI) has asked the new king of Spain, Felipe VI, in a letter addressed during his official visit to Morocco, scheduled for July 14 and 15, questions related to the protection of human rights in that country, said the Spanish electronic journal "elEconomista".

This NGO , among other things,  required clarification on the case of journalist Ali Anzoula who was "arrested last September for publishing a link to a video of AQIM on its website Lakome.com", and the Belgian-American Arras Ali "sentenced to 15 years in prison after he confessed under torture," according to the same the source.

Amnesty International estimates in its letter that "Morocco seems like a bad student in terms of respect for human rights despite its commitment to make efforts in this field."

It also recalls the "excessive use of violence against protesters, torture in detention, systematic imprisonment of journalists who criticize the monarchy and the restriction of freedom of expression in Western Sahara." (SPS)
