Polisario Front condemns arrest of Saharawi blogger

Bir Lehlou (liberated territories), July 8, 2014 (SPS) - Polisario Front has condemned the arrest of the Saharawi journalist and blogger, Mahmud El-Haissan, describing the move as an attempt to silence the Saharawi people and deprive them of their basic rights, in a territory under UN responsibility, whose people still waiting to exercise their right to self-determination.


In a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, President of the Republic and Secretary General of the Frente Polisario Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz said that by doing so, the Moroccan occupying state aims to impose silence and prevent any independent journalists from reporting about its brutal practices and human rights violations against the Saharawis.


The Saharawi president went on saying that such practices aims to deprive the Saharawis of their most fundamental rights guaranteed by the Charter and resolutions of the United Nations, in particular the right to self-determination, expression, assembly and movement.


Expressing strong condemnation to this new Moroccan assault, President Mohamed Abdelaziz drew Ban’s attention that the move coincides with a new wave of escalating repression, on since the start of the holy month of Ramadan.


The letter urged the UN to speedily intervene and exert necessary pressure and sanctions on the Moroccan government so to comply with international legitimacy and free journalist Mahmud El-Haissan and the rest of Saharawi political prisoners.


It also recalled to UN’s responsibility regarding the decolonization of Africa’s last colony, calling for halting Morocco’s plunder of Saharawi natural resources, pull down the Moroccan military wall, as well as establish a UN mechanism to protect, monitor and report about human rights in Western Sahara.
