Algiers, June 29, 2014 (SPS) - Sahrawi President Mohamed Abdelaziz hailed the designation, by the African Union (AU), of the former Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano, special envoy to Western Sahara.
Sahrawi President expressed, in a speech during a debate on the AU Peace and Security Council report, his country’s consideration for the “permanent” follow-up of Western Sahara issue by AU peace and security council and commission.
This follow-up “was consolidated by the designation of a representative of the African Union for Western Sahara, namely the former Mozambican president Joaquim Chissano,” he added, underlining “Saharawi Republic’s full cooperation.”
He also hoped that the AU special envoy finalizes his visits and contacts programme to allow “the commission to present, shortly, its report on the matter.”
The Sahrawi President said that the Kingdom of Morocco “hinders the self-determination referendum in Western Sahara and the negotiations, plunders resources of occupied Western Sahara, forbids access to independent observers into the territory, represses defenceless Sahrawi citizens and tries civilians at military courts.” (SPS)
