BOGOTA (Columbia), May 12, 2014 (SPS) - Columbian Senate has called its government to recognize the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) and boost relations with this country in a resolution addressed Saturday to the president of Columbia, Juan Manuel Santos.

The Columbian Senate has adopted a resolution asking the Columbian government to recognize the SADR, boost bilateral relations and defend human rights in Western Sahara.

“For historical reasons and in conformity with the Columbian state’s principles, we support international legality and peace in Africa, and consider it important to recognize the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and boost relations with this country,” indicated the resolution.

“Also, we ask the president to plead in favour of the respect of human rights in Western Sahara, following the demand made by the Secretary General of the United Nations in its last report submitted to the Security Council.”

The resolution, presented by Senator Juan Lozano as well as 13 members of the Senate was adopted “unanimously” by the Columbian Commission for Friendship with Saharawi people. (SPS)
