Washignton (United States)- Polisario Front expressed satisfaction with the Security Council’s commitment in favour of a political solution to the Western Sahara conflict based on Saharawis’ inalienable right to self-determination,” Ahmed Boukhari, Polisario Front representative at the UN.
The Sahrawi official made the statement in reaction to the United Nations Security Council’s adoption of a resolution on Western Sahara, in which it reiterates its call to a “fair, sustainable and mutually acceptable political solution, providing Western Sahara people’s self-determination.”
Boukhari was speaking against the status quo in relation to Western Sahara issue.
For Ahmed Boukhari, such a process implies the holding of a self-determination referendum which includes the option of independence, in conformity with the UN General Assembly Resolutions 1514 (XV) and 1541 (XV), as well as the United Nations’ settlement plan which was approved by the UN Security Council in 1991.”
Concerning the issue of Sahrawi Human rights, Boukhari said that the Polisario Front regretted that the MINURSO remains the only United Nations peace mission without a human rights monitoring mechanism.
There are however “hard evidence” on the “serious and systematic” human rights violation by Morocco and despite the fact that the UN Secretary General said, in his report, to be in favour of an “independent and impartial” monitoring mechanism of human rights in Western Sahara, noted the Sahrawi representative.
