Algiers, April 22, 2014 (SPS) - Ambassador of Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) to Algeria Brahim Ghali dubbed Monday “positive” the report of the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at a Security Council meeting as he presented the Western Sahara issue as a “decolonization issue.”
In a conference initiated by the Ecole Superieur of Political Sciences, the Saharawi ambassador said that this positive report will push the Security Council to review the way in which the Sahrawi issue is addressed as he clearly defined the nature of the conflict.
For the Sahrawi ambassador, 2015 is a “decisive” year for the Sahrawi people, as the report charges the Moroccan side to “take seriously two issues: to acknowledge the urgency of finding a political solution to the conflict and to define the adequate formula of self-determination.”
If this acknowledgement doesn’t occur, “the Security Council’s members will be called to review the framework of the negotiation process which was presented in April 2007 to Polisario Front and Morocco,” he said.
In this regard, Mr. Brahim Ghali hailed the content of the report which tackled the illegal exploitation of Western Sahara’s natural resources by Morocco and registered foreign companies.
For his part, Head of Algerian National Committee of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (CNASPS) Mr. Said Layachi said that this conference is part of “solidarity with the Sahrawi people,” hoping that the Security Council promulgates a resolution supporting the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
