New York (United Nations) April 19, 2014 (SPS) -  The UN Security Council held on Thursday consultations on the question of  Western Sahara and its developments in the light of the report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations submitted April 10.

It has been decided to introduce a motion on April 23, regarding the Sahrawi issue, particularly the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in the Western Sahara (MINURSO), respect for human rights and protection of natural resources in Western Sahara.

In this context, Reuters news agency quoted the Representative of the Polisario Front in the United Nations, Mr. Ahmed Bukhary, indicating that ‘the United States on Thursday prepared a draft resolution that would renew the U.N. mission’ in the Western Sahara.

Last week U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon renewed his appeals for sustained human rights monitoring in the North African Western Sahara region and warned against unfair exploitation of the region's natural resources. (SPS)
