Algeria, Ecuador for “fair” and “lasting” settlement of Sahrawi issue

Algiers, April 10, 2014 (SPS) - Algeria and Ecuador have called for a “fair” and “lasting” settlement for Western Sahara issue, based on a mutually acceptable political solution which guarantees the right to self-determination of the Sahrawi people.


In a joint communiqué released after the two-day visit to Algiers by Ecuador’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Political Integration, Mr. Leonardo Arizaga, both parties welcomed the “consistency” of UN and the international community commitment to resolve this issue “in accordance with the principles and objectives of the UN Charter and the resolutions of the General Assembly and Security Council.”


Algeria and Ecuador “strongly support the efforts deployed, to this end, by Christopher Ross, Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara,” the statement said.


In this respect, they stressed the “importance” of enlarging the mandate of the (MINURSO), the establishment of a mechanism to protect human rights in the occupied territories of Sahara Western. (SPS)
