WSAF calls for expanding prerogatives of MINURSO to include respect of human rights in Western Sahara

Submitted on

London, March 16, 2014 (SPS) - Western Sahara Action Forum (WSAF) Published a report entitled "crimes without a witness" on its Web site addressing violations of human rights against Saharawis Committed by the Moroccan occupation since April 2013.

The report focuses on cases of torture and denial of freedom of assembly and expression reported recently and summarizes other human rights violations that continued for a long time such as banning of cultural freedom and the right to work and to benefit from the natural resources.

The report indicates that in the absence of a mechanism to monitor human rights, it remains impossible to record all cases of human rights violations, therefore it lists cases mentioned in the reports of internationally renowned human rights organizations such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and front line defenders in addition to Sahrawi associations.

The report recalled the responsibilities of the United Nations in the protection and promotion of the territories under decolonization and reminded that Morocco has reneged its commitments to the United States during the visit of the King to Washington where he promised, in a joint statement with president Obama, to promote human rights.

WSAF urged in its report the Security Council for the creation of an independent, impartial and permanent human rights monitoring in Western Sahara and warned that failure to include such a mechanism within the MINURSO next April would lead to further violations of human rights and would further complicates the conflict.
