Sofia, March 5, 2014 (SPS) - The Bulgarian Left Party voiced its solidarity with the Saharawi people in their fair fight for freedom, highlighting that only a free and fair referendum of self-determination for the Saharawi people could peace and stability for the whole region.
In a declaration of support to the Saharawi cause, issued during its National Committee’s session, held on 22nd February 2014, the Bulgarian Left Party reaffirmed support to the inalienable right of the Saharawi people to independence and self-determination, as granted by the UN General Assembly Resolution 1514 (XV) and confirmed by the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion in October 1975.
The party also voiced support to the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara, Mr. Christopher Ross, in his efforts to resolve the conflict between the Kingdom of Morocco and the POLISARIO Front.
It also expressed conviction that only a free and fair referendum of self-determination-as specified by the UN/OAU Settlement Plan- for the Saharawi people “could bring a lasting solution for the problem and peace and stability for the whole region.”
The Left Party of Bulgaria demanded the end of the brutal repression and human rights abuses undertaken against the defenseless Saharawi civilians by Moroccan authorities, regularly reported by human rights organizations such as Amnesty International, Human Right Watch and the Robert F. Kennedy Centre for Justice and Human Rights.
It also called for the immediate release of all Saharawi political prisoners, urging to expand the mandate of MINURSO (the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) to include the monitoring and the protection against human rights abuses.
The Bulgarian Left Party was created in February 2009. (SPS)
